Health Hazards of Smoking

A very good morning to our magnanimous principal, Principal Siti Aishah, munificent vice-principals, dedicated teachers and my fellow friends. I would like to express my gratitude to the teacher in charge for giving me this opportunity to give a talk during the school assembly in this hall. I feel honoured to be here to share some knowledge with everyone else here. Today, I am going to talk on the health hazards of smoking. I hope everyone here can lend me your ears for this period of time.
As the president of the Red Crescent Society in our school, I find that there are a lot of students in our school lead the smoking habit. As we know, smoking brings a lot of negative consequences. Therefore, the government had prohibited students to smoke in the school compound. They also discourage people from all walk of lives keep on smoking. Our school authority, as a part of community, need to take on the obligation on holding back the students who are leading smoking habits. Hence, in conjunction with World Health Day, I have been asked to tell all of you about the hazards of smoking.
First of all, smoking will badly affect the lifespan of the individual. Studies show that smoking a small cigarette would shorten your life by 5 minutes. Imagine that there are 20 cigarette in a box, how many '5 minutes' will be shorten in your life if you have them all in one day. Furthermore, smoking will also reduce life expectancy by eight to ten years. This is because in a cigarette, there are a lot of chemical materials which will lead to death.
In addition, smoking increase the risk of getting cancer. For instance, lungs cancer, throats cancer and mouth cancer. This is due to the reason that composition of cigarette contains nicotine which is a carcinogenic substance. Carcinogenic substance is a chemical substance which is harmful and will stimulate the growth of cancerous cells in the body. As this passes through your lungs, throats and mouth, cancerous cells are stimulated to grow. Moreover, smoking will cause heart diseases through blood clots in the bloodstream and emphysema. Blockage of the coronary artery in the heart will not only result in cardiovascular disease, but also stroke and eventually death.
Apart from that, smoking will worsen asthma, enzema and allergies. This is because chemical substances in cigarette will attack immune system of our body. As a result, our immune system is broken down and pathogen can easily invade our body. Besides, smoking causes unhealthy gums and teethLadies and gentlemen, I can sure that you used to discover someone who has yellowish teeth with black , dark gums. Let me tell you that this is actually the effect of smoking. Tar and other blacken and yellowish substances found in the cigarettes will stick on the gums and teeth when the cigarette smoke pass through them. Consequently, there will be difficult to chew food and may be in pain when speaking as the gums are destroyed.
In the nutshell, smoking brings a lot of negative effects which are harmful to us. As a student and future leader of the country, we should get away from smoking. Smoking neither bring us wealth nor health. It will only finish up our money buying it to destroy our body. It does not make sense! Smoking is the action of foolish person. Please stop becoming foolish person and let us lead a healthy lifestyle without smoking. As a result, our country will be well-developed and is able to compete with other country in the world. This is because healthy residents will work hard to develop country. Let us together say "Tak Nak" to smoking to avoid it from rubbing off our bright future. Thank you!
